Protection against viruses / Trojans / spy ware / ad ware:
You need to use an anti-virus software, one that is always up-to-date. I recommend Avast!, which is free for home users and can be downloaded here: avast! This is an anti-virus software which also protects you on the Internet, it has standard virus defense, web defense (stops connection to infected websites), it protects against mail viruses etc.

If you are looking for software for your business, or you are willing to pay for it, you should choose nod32 or kaspersky (also you should buy the packages with built-in Internet security).

Also if you want more protection against spyware / adware you should run ad-aware, the free version doesn’t have real time protection, but it’s still pretty useful. You can download it here: Ad-aware

Web browsing:
Definitely you need to use a good browser like
Firefox or Chrome.

Protection against spam:
Use Thunderbird mail software . It’s spam filters are really good, almost all spam will end in the spam folder. It can download mail from different mail accounts at the same time. Basically the software will work perfect for you, except if you need really special services.

A note about passwords:
Every site writes about passwords, I also write because they are really important. Change your password monthly. Use 6-8 characters, capital letters letters and special characters too (like !#@), numbers.

FTP / Total Commander:
Old Total Commander store FTP passwords without encryption, this means they can easily steal all your FTP passwords with a spy ware program. You should use master password for your FTP connections (Network – FTP connections – Encoding – and protect all your FTP accounts with a master password). This way your accounts will be safe, you just need to use your master password if you want to connect to a server.

A final warning: The thought of false safety is even worse than being without safety. You can’t think that no one will attack you, because you are not someone who worth hacking. But spyware programs don’t think, they steal everyone’s data, and you might end up in a bad situation, if they manage to steal your bank account password, or a few FTP passwords (that happened to me, and that gave me the inspiration to write this article).

The language itself was initiated by Ben Fry and Casey Reas. It is developed by a small team of volunteers. Processing is free, open source, it is availbe for everyone, the community and available libraries are great.

Students at hundreds of schools around the world use Processing for classes ranging from middle school math education to undergraduate programming courses to graduate fine arts studios. There are libraries for music / sound processing, animations, 3D, webcamera functions etc.

You can do something about it, just make one more people smile a day, and this will bring more and more smile in the world. Just be a little more positive and be optimistic. Try to be more patient, have a little more sympathy and things will become really good.

The Japan Wacom company released their latest Intuos this year. I am a happy owner of an Intuos 4 since June. Previously I had a Wacom graphire 2, which was pretty small and old, but I liked it too (I have it more than 4-5 years and it works perfectly). Intuos 4 is pretty nice, comes with buttons and little displays next to the buttons, so you always see, what is the function of the buttons.

There is a pen stand, which is great, because you can open it, and store your nibs inside. The nib extractor is also inside the pen stand. There are different nibs for the pen (five standard nibs, one flex nib, one stroke nib, and three hard felt nibs). I like to work with the hard felt nibs, the standard ones are good too, but they wear off pretty easily.

The changes from Intuos 3: pen pressure levels are 2048 in Intuos 4, it was 1024 in Intuos 3. The tablet can be used with left and right hand too, you can easily rotate the tablet and there are multiple USB connectors, on both side.

There is a touch ring on the Intuos 4, which pretty much works like the touchring on ipods, it is a nice tool to change brush size or zoom in/out. We can also set different touch ring functions (4 different settings for a program), and switch between them with a button.

You can purchase different accessories for your tablet. These are not cheap but can add great comfort and different tools for your work flow.

Wacom tablets are not cheap, but the quality is perfect, and it is just the best tool to use for painters. I bought the L size, but I don’t use all the active area, so I guess an M size is perfect for everyone (except with a very big screen, like 24″).

There is also a little shop on the site, containing Ryan’s tutorial DVDs. A few titles: Volume 1: Rendering Matte Vehicles, Volume 3: Rendering Hi-Tech Architecture, Volume 4: Rendering Low-Tech Architecture. Now these DVDs are not as cheap as movie DVDs but they provide useful tips and everyday techniques that can lead you to successful designs.

Most of the time he works on a powerful PC, with a wacom intuos 3 tablet, using Maya, Photoshop and Painter.

Matte painting: Matte painting is a technique often used for movies, where the painting is used to create environment elements which would be impossible (or too expensive) to build. A few years ago these paintings were painted on glass and most of the time they fit in the scenes perfectly. Nowadays matte paintings are created using computers and tablets. With the use of 3D programs film makers can achieve great, realistic effects so they can create whatever they want.
Matte paintings often contain elements from photos, but enhanced, so there are things on these pictures which are painted only.
